Tinnitus is a debilitating & persistent ringing, clicking or buzzing in the ears and usually points to a fault in the auditory system.
Today, there is no effective treatment for tinnitus.
Imagine living with a constant and debilitating ringing in your ears every moment of every day.
This is the unfortunate and crippling situation for around 1 in 3 people around the globe. Tinnitus can often lead to severe depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Worse, there’s no effective treatment or surgery for tinnitus. Doctors often prescribe a hearing test or brain scan both of which are ineffective for diagnosis, leaving those affected with zero options and often suffering for years.

Our Goal Is To Help Diagnose Tinnitus More Easily
To take on this challenge, we’re using a non-invasive, brain imaging technique called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
Results so far show there is more engagement between the auditory and frontal areas of the brain in tinnitus patients in a resting state.
This indicates it’s not just an auditory disorder and involves other parts of the brain.
Once we can track how the resting and evoked signals differ between people with and without tinnitus, we should be able to monitor and differentiate the varying levels of this condition.
Importantly, this technology will allow clinicians to better diagnose and prescribe effective treatments for tinnitus, helping to ease suffering for millions of people around the world.
But...
"Tinnitus is an auditory torment that has the potential to shatter nerves and compromise one's emotional and mental wellbeing. Too often tinnitus succeeds in triggering depression, anxiety and suicide ideation in sufferers.
To have Bionics Institute put time and effort into tinnitus research gives me great hope and lists my spirits. "
